CLAUDIA FISCHER | Heimische Arten

We at the Loris Gallery are pleased to present Heimische Arten, the first solo exhibition by Claudia Fischer. 

Migration, language and cultural identity form the interface of Claudia Fischer’s creative work. Starting from her personal biography – she lives in Lisbon and Jena – Fischer focuses on the subject of migration, embedded as it is in all-encompassing social, economic and political developments. In this context she has produced numerous interventions and installations in both art spaces and public areas. 

Currently she is working on identity constructs related to the notion of “the foreign” and being “at home”, as well as the translatability of native and foreign languages. Fischer’s photo series presented in HEIMISCHE ARTEN focuses on the possibility of oscillating between the two and was produced during her stay at Künstlerhaus Schloss Wiepersdorf in 2008. 

The interior views of constructed image spaces shown in the exhibition have their origin in written and pictorial material from a bilingual illustrated dictionary belonging to the Schloss Wiepersdorf holding of books. These are juxtaposed with a series of photographs of listed sculptural pulpits in the Brandenburg landscape. Hence the prescribed systems of order in the illustrated vocabulary constitute the coordinates and are placed in relationship to the surroundings of Wiepersdorf. The viewer becomes something of a traveller, moving between the familiar and the strange, and between the self and the other, a reciprocal relationship in which identity is constantly reinvented.
